This course in unit explores the interconnected development of capitalism and nationalism from the early modern period through the 19th century. It examines how economic transformations driven by capitalism influenced national identities, political movements, and social structures in various regions around the world. Unit 2 explores the complex historical relationship between Africa and European colonial powers from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. It examines the political, social, economic, and cultural impacts of colonialism on African societies and the responses of African peoples to colonial rule. Through a critical analysis of various case studies, students will gain insights into the legacies of colonialism that continue to influence contemporary African states and societies.

Unit 3 examines the transformative social, economic, and political landscape of Ethiopia from the mid-19th century until the beginning of World War II in 1941. It explores key developments in Ethiopian society, including the impact of modernization efforts, the strengthening of centralized authority under leaders such as Menelik II, and the resistance against colonial encroachment. The unit also highlights economic changes, including trade shifts and agricultural practices, as well as the role of Ethiopia in the broader context of African nationalism and resistance to imperialism. Additionally, the unit analyzes Ethiopia’s unique position as one of the few African nations to maintain its sovereignty during the Scramble for Africa and its implications for national identity and state-building efforts. Through this exploration, students will gain a deeper understanding of Ethiopia’s role in shaping the narrative of colonialism and resistance in Africa.
