Lesson 1: Summary
Africa is home to over 1000 languages, categorized into four main super-families: Afro-Asiatic, Niger-Congo, Nilo-Saharan, and Khoisan. Afro-Asiatic spans northern Africa and the Horn, while Niger-Congo covers West and Bantu Africa. Nilo-Saharan is found in Central and Eastern Africa, and Khoisan is primarily in Southern Africa. Additionally, Arabic and various European languages were introduced through historical migrations and colonialism, influencing the continent’s linguistic diversity.
