Welcome to Grade 11 Economics Module Two!
In this module, we will delve deeper into various advanced economic concepts, building on the foundational knowledge gained in Module One. The focus will be on understanding trade, finance, economic development, and sectorial policies and strategies, with a specific emphasis on the Ethiopian context. This module aims to enhance your analytical skills and provide a comprehensive understanding of how trade and economic policies shape national and global economies.
Structured into three main units, this module will guide you through:
- Unit Five: Trade and Finance – Explore the fundamentals of trade, including domestic and international trade theories. Understand the balance of payments, trade policies, exchange rates, and the impact of regional integration and globalization on Ethiopia.
- Unit Six: Economic Development – Analyze economic growth and development, with a focus on the Human Development Index (HDI) and the performance of Ethiopia against the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Unit Seven: Main Sectors, Sectorial Policies, and Strategies of Ethiopia – Examine the key sectors of the Ethiopian economy, including agriculture, industry, and services. Understand historical and current policies and strategies applied in these sectors.

At the end of successful completion of the study of this module, you will be able to:
- Define and explain the concept of trade and its importance.
- Differentiate between domestic and international trade.
- Justify Adam Smith’s absolute cost advantage theory and David Ricardo’s comparative advantage theory of international trade.
- Contrast the basic similarities and differences between these two international trade theories.
- Describe the components of the balance of payments and the determinants of exchange rates.
- Evaluate trade policies and strategies, including regional integration and globalization practices relevant to Ethiopia.
- Apply the Human Development Index (HDI) and analyze Ethiopia’s progress towards Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Understand economic growth versus economic development and measures of productivity.
- Review historical and contemporary agricultural, industrial, and service sector policies and strategies in Ethiopia.
